About Jarnail Bal
I am a Consultant Neurosurgeon and the lead for cerebrovascular (neurovascular) surgery at Barts Health NHS Trust. My practice covers a wide range of brain and spine conditions, with a particular focus on the treatment of brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), cavernous malformations, brain tumours and skull base conditions. I also specialise in acoustic neuromas, meningiomas, facial pain such as trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, head injuries and adult spinal surgery, which includes the management of back, neck and arm pain as well as sciatica.
My medical journey began at the University of Manchester, where I studied Medicine. Alongside my degree, I undertook an additional year at University College London in Medical Physics, graduating with First Class Honours. This gave me a strong foundation in both the science and technology that support modern neurosurgery. After medical school, I completed my neurosurgical training in North London before pursuing specialist fellowships in Skull Base Surgery at Barts and Queen’s Hospitals, and in Cerebrovascular Surgery at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. Addenbrooke’s is one of the UK’s busiest and most advanced cerebrovascular centres, and this experience gave me the opportunity to develop skills in some of the most complex neurosurgical procedures.
Throughout my career, I have always placed patients and their families at the heart of my work. I know that facing a brain, skull base or spinal condition can feel overwhelming, and my priority is to ensure that you feel supported, informed and reassured every step of the way. I believe in open and honest communication, taking the time to explain diagnoses, treatment options and outcomes in a clear and compassionate manner.
My team and I work closely together to provide safe, effective and personalised care. We understand that no two patients are the same, and we tailor our approach to your individual needs, whether that involves surgery, monitoring, or working with other specialists to provide comprehensive care.
Alongside my NHS role at Barts Health, I also see patients at HCA facilities, allowing me to provide high-quality care in both public and private settings. My aim is always the same: to use my expertise and experience to help patients achieve the best possible outcome in a safe, supportive and professional environment.

Your decision for private care
While I am proud to lead complex neurosurgical services within the NHS, I recognise that the system can sometimes involve waiting times and limited flexibility. Choosing private care allows patients to access appointments and treatments more quickly, often at times that suit their personal and family needs.
In a private setting I am able to spend more time with each patient, offering a more personalised and detailed consultation. This can create a calmer and more supportive environment at what is often a very stressful time. Importantly, the quality of surgery and clinical expertise remains the same, as I bring my experience as a leading NHS consultant directly into private practice.
For many patients, private care offers reassurance through timely access, continuity, and the opportunity to build a close relationship with their surgeon, while still receiving the highest standards of safety and professionalism.
