Nerve Tumours

Definition

Nerve tumours are abnormal growths arising from peripheral nerves or nerve sheaths. Common types include schwannomas and neurofibromas.

Prevalence

Uncommon. May occur sporadically or as part of genetic conditions like NF1 or NF2.

Symptoms

  • Localised pain

  • Tingling or numbness

  • Slow-growing mass

  • Weakness if the tumour affects motor nerves

Diagnosis

  • MRI with contrast

  • Ultrasound for superficial lesions

  • Biopsy in select cases

  • Genetic testing when syndromes are suspected

Treatment Options

  • Observation for small, asymptomatic tumours

  • Microsurgical removal while preserving nerve function

  • Radiotherapy for select deep or recurrent tumours
