Haemangioblastoma

Definition

A haemangioblastoma is a benign, highly vascular tumour typically occurring in the cerebellum, spinal cord, or brainstem.

Prevalence

Rare. May occur sporadically or in association with Von Hippel–Lindau (VHL) disease.

Symptoms

  • Headache

  • Balance problems

  • Vision issues

  • Weakness or sensory loss (spinal lesions)

  • Symptoms related to associated cysts

Diagnosis

  • MRI with contrast

  • Screening for multiple lesions in suspected VHL

  • Genetic testing when indicated

Treatment Options

  • Microsurgical removal (often curative)

  • Observation for small, asymptomatic tumours

  • Radiosurgery for select cases
