Definition

Leg pain refers to discomfort anywhere from the hip to the foot and may arise from muscles, joints, nerves, bones, or blood vessels.

Prevalence

Very common. Often related to musculoskeletal strain, nerve compression, or vascular issues.

Symptoms

  • Aching, throbbing, or sharp pain

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Weakness or cramping

  • Pain worsened by walking (vascular) or sitting (nerve-related)

  • Swelling or redness in some conditions

Diagnosis

  • Physical examination

  • Assessment of gait, strength, and sensation

  • X-ray, MRI, or ultrasound

  • Nerve conduction studies if neuropathy is suspected

  • Vascular studies for blood flow problems

Treatment Options

  • Physiotherapy and stretching

  • Anti-inflammatory medications

  • Treating underlying nerve or vascular causes

  • Compression therapy for venous issues

  • Surgery for severe nerve compression or structural causes
