Definition

A craniopharyngioma is a benign but locally aggressive tumour near the pituitary gland, affecting hormones and vision.

Prevalence

Rare, accounting for 2–5% of brain tumours. Affects children and adults.

Symptoms

  • Vision loss or double vision

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Excessive thirst or urination

  • Headaches

  • Growth or developmental delays in children

Diagnosis

  • MRI with contrast

  • Hormonal blood tests

  • Visual field testing

Treatment Options

  • Surgical removal (complete or partial depending on location)

  • Radiotherapy for residual or recurrent tumour

  • Lifelong hormone replacement when needed

  • Regular MRI surveillance
