Meningiomas

Definition

Meningiomas are typically benign tumours arising from the meninges, the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord.

Prevalence

Most common primary brain tumour in adults. More frequent in women and older age groups.

Symptoms

  • Headaches

  • Seizures

  • Vision or hearing problems

  • Weakness or numbness

  • Cognitive or personality changes

  • Symptoms depend on tumour location

Diagnosis

  • MRI with contrast

  • CT scan if calcification is suspected

  • Histological grading after surgical removal

Treatment Options

  • Observation for small, asymptomatic tumours

  • Surgical removal for accessible or symptomatic lesions

  • Stereotactic radiosurgery for residual or difficult-to-access tumours

  • Ongoing imaging surveillance
