Foot Drop

Definition

Foot drop is the inability to lift the front of the foot due to weakness or paralysis of the muscles responsible for ankle dorsiflexion.

Prevalence

Relatively common and often related to nerve compression, spinal problems, or neurological diseases.

Symptoms

  • Dragging the foot

  • High-stepping gait

  • Tripping or unsteadiness

  • Numbness along the shin or foot

Diagnosis

  • Examination of leg strength and reflexes

  • MRI of the spine or knee to locate nerve compression

  • EMG and nerve conduction studies

  • Ultrasound for peripheral nerve evaluation

Treatment Options

  • Physiotherapy and strengthening exercises

  • Ankle-foot orthosis (AFO)

  • Treating the underlying cause (e.g., lumbar nerve decompression)

  • Nerve or tendon surgery in select cases
